Morphological Control and Covalent Functionalization of 1D Gold Nanocrystals

Near monodisperse one-dimensional nanocrystals of gold are capable of spontaneous organization into colloidal single crystals that contain millions of nanocrystals and measure up to 100 microns in lateral dimensions. The crystallization is strongly influenced by the solvent evaporation rate, the nature of substrates, and the amount of free surfactant present in solution. This presentation will describe recent developments in covalent functionalization of metallic nanorods with cationic and non-ionic thiols and their influence on the stability and colloidal self-organization. In addition, the synthesis of microscopic gold rods and nanowires in aqueous solution will be discussed.
