Conventional chemotherapy uses intravenous injection of cytotoxic drugs which causes systemic side-effects such as nausea, destruction of immune cells, anorexia, and loss of halir. Only a very small percentage of the cytotoxic drug actually reaches the tumor cells. In the early 1980's, a new therapy techniuqe called "chemoembolization" was developed wherein antitumor drugs were carried inside microparticles which had been injected into arteries leading directly to vascular tumors.
