An anatomically shaped porous coated (P.C.A.(r)) canine femoral component whose beaded surface was coated with a solution precipitated calcium phosphate coating (PCPC) was implanted in six mongrel dogs. Dogs were sacrificed at 12 and 26 weeks post operatively. A total of 10 strain gages were attached to the proximal cortical surface of the implanted femur. Strain gages were affixed to the surface of the non-implanted intact femur at the same locations as the implanted femur to provide a control. Load was applied to either the femoral head or the head of the femur via an unconstrained acetabular component in 25 pound increments, from 0 to 75 pounds. Strain data was collected for each femur. Strain results were compared to those for uncoated P.C.A. implanted femora. Initial investigations indicate that the PCPC coating provides initial stability ingrowth at an earlier time then would have been achieved without such a coating.
