Facilities available to students consist of a network of SUN, HP-Apollo and PC compatibles all running the HIPS image processing package and available on open-access or booking. HIPS and in-house developed packages are also installed on a Concurrent Computer System 6600 and a Sparcstation-LX in a Digital Signal Processing Laboratory used for research and final year projects. DIP facilities provide an attractive means of capturing undergraduate student interest in the early years of the course. Computer and video demonstrations given to first year student seminar groups provide a focal point for discussing both the broad context of Digital Signal Processing and DIP application, and the detail of particular operations, many of which can be explained effectively in qualitative terms.
