Presented is an electronic implementation of a chaotic oscillator based on an exactly solvable piecewise linear differential equation intended for communication system applications. This electronic oscillator design is based on a single transistor in a common base amplifier configuration combined with an LC resonant circuit and a mixed-signal feedback network. Included in this work is a derivation of a circuit model. This implementation introduces higher order dynamics from the addition of the transistor; however, they become less prevalent as the oscillation frequency increases. Simulation and hardware results show that the chaotic oscillator shares very similar characteristics with the second-order differential equation dynamics. Simulations demonstrate that the system is sensitive to initial conditions. Hardware and simulation results show thick solution bands in the phase space plots.
