In this article, we present the results of an ongoing preliminary study, which looks into engineers' initialperceptions of the similarities and differences between engineering and mathematics as disciplines,their perceptions of the similarities and the differences in mathematics vs. engineering teaching, andtheir perceptions of mathematics teaching, as they begin a mathematics teachers' preparationprogram. The research tool is a semi-structured interview that was analysed according to qualitativemethodology. The results revealed perceptions of the practical and applicative nature of engineeringversus the purely deductive nature of mathematics. Regarding teaching mathematics vs. teachingengineering, both were mostly perceived as sharing similar characteristics. Concerning mathematicsteaching, the issues addressed were mainly general teaching issues, not specific to mathematicsteaching.
