The media fills more and more both the time of children's play and leisure as well as the adults' workinghours and leisure time with its contents. At its best, media conveys new information, producesbenefits for the everyday work and provides joy and emotion. The teaching of media skills, their adoptionand command are challenges which the school has to be able to answer. The media skills arecivic skills needed in the information society.In Finland the level of resources in information technology in schools is high but it is important to teachthe children to use the media correctly and in versatile ways. Implementing media education as a partof the teaching use of information and communication technology is varying depending on the implementingparty. Also, there are big differences in the teachers' levels of skills. In the national core curriculumthat is to be completed in 2016, information and communication skills are among as one of theseven cross-curricular themes. In it, the perspective of the teaching use of information and communicationtechnology is dealt with as a part of the operational culture of the school and the description ofthe learning environments and approaches, in the definition of the teaching which utilises distancelearning connections and as an important tool in the cooperation of home and school. (The nationalcore curriculum 2014.)The children's developing media competences and media skills can be developed and evaluated.Hautaviita (2012) developed as her doctoral thesis research the evaluation indicator for media competencesof the 6-9-year-old children (the preschoolers and the pupils in grades 1 -2), and it was thebasis on which the skill levels of the children's media competences were created. The children's developingmedia skills were divided into practical, social, language and ethical media competences. Inthis article this material is used to describe children's developing media competences and media skillsas well as the evaluation of them in teaching. The research subjects in this article are sixteen Finnishchildren whose development of media competences was closely observed for one year. This articleshows the development of children's practical and social media competences and how they can beinfluenced. They can be effectively utilised in the learning.
