Ontology-based Simulation of Manufacturing Systems in Open and Dynamic Contexts

Manufacturing systems are usually complex systems, whereas their optimal operation is essential for economic success. Simulation-based operator assist systems (OAS) can be used for decision support during runtime, increasing the uptime of manufacturing systems and therefore increasing the economic success. However, developing an OAS requires a good under-standing of both, the manufacturing system under consideration for simulation (SUCfs) within an OAS as well as the changing context during runtime, i.e. the objects that interact with the SUCfs (e.g. orders and products). In order to be able to cope with frequently changing context during runtime of an OAS, it is necessary to develop information models of the context that are built on ontologies representing the information that is subject to frequent changes. Within this paper, we provide an integrated concept for developing simulation models for manufacturing systems that use ontologies for open and dynamic contexts as an input. In order to verify the proposed concept, an exemplary OAS has been developed that is being introduced within this contribution.
