In order to ensure the safety of the high speed railway electric multiple units (EMU), a regular inspection is necessary for hollow shafts. A hollow shaft array electromagnetic testing system is developed with integrated non-destructive testing techniques such as the eddy current testing and the metal magnetic memory testing. A prolonged experiment on both hollow shafts of standard axle and EMU was held. The experimental results indicated that the developed NDT system can fully meet the requirements of inspection during manufacture and the in-service inspection of the EMU hollow shaft.
