Francis Rendel Erskine Crossley was born on 21 July 1915, in Belper, Derbyshire, England. His father Erskine Alick Crossley served as a director of his grandfather's company, Crossley Motors Limited, and his mother Edith Mary Helme was the daughter of Sir Norval Watson Helme an English businessman and Liberal Party politician from Lancaster. Erskine's father, who had been wounded in the Battle of the Somme during the First World War, died during the flu epidemic in 1920.
