An Efficient Educational Methodology for Teaching 'Theory of Machines and Mechanisms' Discipline

This paper presents an efficient method for teaching students the "Theory of mechanisms and machines" (TMM) discipline. Method is based on a three dimensional computer modeling of complex models. It is aimed at the best comprehensibility of discipline, popularization and dissemination of scientific knowledge with an increasing effect in case of open access to 3D-documents hosted on Internet network. The students during their study at the 《Theory of mechanisms and machines》 Department at Bauman Moscow State Technical University investigated and carried out a 3D-document of a "Ferguson's planetary mechanism" with No. 9, which appeared to be a not-full copy of the Solar system model called as "The Orrery" and manufactured by a Scottish astronomer - James Ferguson. Based on the use of multimedia and 3D-modeling, the proposed method relates to the information-and-developing technologies. It can be used to support students' research work, develop spatial thinking and creative imagination of future engineers.
