Monitoring and Analysis of Winter Maintenance Operations for Parking Lots

This paper describes results from a unique field study focused on winter maintenance of parking lots. The study used both stationary webcams and smart scales with a Smartphone app to track the maintenance activities of 6 maintenance contractors at over 50 different parking lots in the winter season of 2012-13. Based on the data collected from over 850 maintenance operations, factors that affected the contractors’ maintenance decisions, such as salt application rate and pre-application are identified, including temperature, precipitation, and event duration. Moreover, this paper also presents the results on the accuracy of the feed-rate based salt measurement system and its appropriateness as a tool for monitoring salt usage for winter maintenance of parking lots. To the best of our knowledge, this research is the first undertaking such a large scale study. The main findings and implications of the technologies used are highlighted in reference to their application to the parking lot winter maintenance industry.
