Viral-Induced Neoplastic Diseases of Backyard Poultry

A number of neoplasms seen in backyard chickens in practice have known viral causes. There are 3 important virus-induced neoplastic diseases of poultry, including Marek's disease, avian leukosis, and reticuloendotheliosis. These diseases and their associated tumors are principally of mesodermal origin, and are transmissible. Although there are some shared characteristics of these diseases and their neoplasms, there are some distinct differences in their epidemiology, clinical presentations, and means of diagnosis and preventative strategies.
