Regional downstream hydraulic geometry equations are plotted using bankfull flow, as defined by the 1.5-year recurrence interval, and bankfull widths. The study includes 634 gauge stations located across Canada and are grouped by factors that affect or are correlated with bank and bed stability. The exponent, b, is found to increase as soil drainage characteristics of the bank material decreases. Vegetation effects on river widths were dependant on the scale of flow. Smaller river widths were also found in areas with steeper slopes, which may be because bedrock confined channels are more likely situated in areas with higher gradients. Knowledge of the effects of these parameters on bank stability will lead to improved delineation of regional downstream hydraulic geometry equations.
