Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in German Dairy Herds

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been detected on dairy farms around the world. The overall MRSA prevalence in dairy herds is low (Schnitt and Tenhagen 2019). In some countries, MRSA prevalence seems to be increasing (Tenhagen et al. 2018). In veterinary medicine, treatment options for mastitis caused by MRSA are limited. Especially dry cow therapy with beta-lactam antibiotics, as an important part of S. aureus control programs, is probably ineffective.
