Integrating science into practice and getting it right

I am deeply honored by the invitation to deliver the Howard Dunne lecture. I certainly appreciate the gravity of this assignment and I have sought diligently to prepare a fitting memorial to Dr. Dunne. It was not my pleasure to meet Dr. Dunne personally, but I knew him well through his text, Diseases of Swine.1 In this context, I first met him in 1971 as an undergraduate at Colorado State University. His well-researched and practical text was a welcome relief in my search for competent, in-depth material that integrated science and pig practice. At that point in time, his work had no peers in the practical arena; it had only one peer in the science of pig production, the "Easter School" publications (reproduction, nutrition, etc.) from the United Kingdom.
