Caregiver awareness of diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular risk factors in patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease at an university hospital in S?o Paulo, Brazil

The objective of this paper is to estimate the awareness of caregivers in regard to cerebrovascular risk factors being potentially treatable causes of Alzheimer's disease. We concluded that caregivers' awareness of the need to control cerebrovascular risk impacts positively on the lifestyles of patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease.Considering the modest effects of cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine over cognition and daily function of patients with Alzheimer's disease,1 control of modifiable risk factors is a sought-after therapeutic goal. More than a third of worldwide cases of Alzheimer's disease are attributable to cerebrovascular risk factors.2 Our aim was to estimate the importance of caregivers' roles in patients' adherence to control of cerebrovascular risk.
