The activity of mining enterprises in Poland is subjected to many specific circumstances. Some of them are the result of natural conditions. Another part of is the result of influence of systemic factors and general economic conditions. These conditions have a significant impact on functioning and financial results of Polish mining enterprises. Because of their importance, in this article the geological and mining determinants of Polish mining enterprises are elaborated. The primary objective of this study is to create a benchmark of Polish mining enterprises based on their fundamental conditions of functioning. The study was conducted in all operating mining enterprises in 2003-2009. Within each of the mentioned criteria the comparison and ranking of examined companies were created. Then the results were aggregated and final benchmark was presented. The results of this research allowed prioritizing mining enterprises and creating a database of determinants in Polish mining.
