Traditionally, leachate analyses as a part of regular landfill monitoring have focused on nitrogen contents, oxygen consumption measured as BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) or COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), heavy metals and, occasionally "classical" persistent organic pollutants ("POPs") such as dioxins or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). The scope of this work is to initially prioritize between emerging contaminants or groups of contaminants which might need special attention when it comes to identifying risks stated by organic compounds through landfill leachate emissions. The focus is on "emerging" organic pollutants; as opposed to "classical" xenobiotic organic compounds such PCB, DDT etc. The prioritization is based on data from a literature review on Swedish and international reports and peer-reviewed scientific papers comprising analytical techniques, as well as results from analysis and quantification of several compounds or compound groups. The data gathered from the reviewed studies is used for a model based initial risk assessment comprising persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. The main focus is on Swedish studies, but similarities and differences to results from international studies are highlighted.
