ASTM D8148 utilizes a proprietary Spectrometer/Nephelometer optical technology consisting of a combination of a near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diode (LED) light source and photodiodes positioned to measure transmission and scatter across the test specimen.This method is being proposed as an alternative to the current ASTM D4176 procedure 1& 2,which leaves definitive fuel ratings at the discretion of those conducting the test.
