Two long-term survivors of gastric small cell carcinoma and examine the prognostic factor by using immunohistochemical analysis

Background: Gastric small cell carcinoma is extremely rare. The purpose of our study is to present our two long-term survivors with gastric small cell carcinoma and to try to establish the prognostic indicator by using immunohistochemical methods.Case reports: 1. A 80 male was found to have advanced carcinoma (Borrmann type II) in the middle portion and underwent surgical resection. The specimen was positive for synaptophisin and chromogranin A. Adjuvant chemotherapy using 5'-DFUR was performed. 2. A 74 female had advanced carcinoma (Borrmann type III) at the antrum and underwent surgery. The specimen was also positive for synaptophisin and chromogranin A. She denied adjuvant chemotherapy but she is still alive. Immuno-histochemically, both tumors were strong positive for E-cadherin and no existence for α5- and α6-integrins.Conclusions: Our cases suggest that aggressive surgical resection may be effective for gastric small cell carcinoma. In addition, immunohistochemical analysis of our cases suggests that the relationship between the expression of E-cadherin and integrins of the tumor may have potential to be the prognostic indicator.
