THE DARK SIDE OF UV NOTES FROM THE FIELD DETAILING REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

The advantages of UV disinfection are substantial. UV is green(er), costs less to operate than hypochlorite, makes not DBPS or toxicity, and is a robust pathogen disinfectant. It is the drawbacks of UV disinfection that are not often discussed. These include startup and regulatory approval, operational troubles, coliform violations, and a general lack of knowledge compared with hypochlorite or chlorine gas. This paper will focuses on the latter, trying to bring balance to the discussion of UV disinfection.
