Hardly a topic of city and regional development was as lively discussed in the last years in practice and science as the thesis of reurbanisation. As a contribution to this debate in a first step new empirical results are presented, afterwards in a second step backgrounds and reasons for the observed trends are examined. A detailed analysis of the population development in the 2000s decade for 78 German city regions is the starting point for the examination. Using this empirical basis it is worked out to what extent a shift in the direction of reurbanisation took actually place in Germany. In the search for explanations it is discussed whether a normal cyclical development or a fundamental changed caused the trend reversal in favour of the core cities.
