Vitamin D supplementation in prostate cancer has an apparent effect on prostatic tissue at the molecular level as evidenced by different expression levels of phospholipids, proteins and N-linked glycans when compared to non-supplemented tissues. Expression levels of six lipid species including phosphatidylcholines and sphingomyelins were found to correlate with Vitamin D supplementation The expression levels allowed prediction of supplementation in a blinded manner, indicating a distinct molecular signature in the expression patterns of the supplemented tissue. Further investigation of these expression patterns in tissues and fluids, and the histologic impact of Vitamin D in prostate cancer, will continue as this study progresses.
