Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is the acute onset of respiratory failure due to non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Currently there are no biomarkers available to identify the 40% people who die form ARDS. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) protein profiling in ARDS has the potential to identify prognostic biomarkers and provide novel insights into the mechanisms underpinning in its pathogenesis. Our overall objective is to characterize the global protein expression of ARDS BALF to identify function based pathways of survival. Patients with ARDS were divided into subgroups based on the phase of ARDS when the BALF was collected (early or late divided at day 7) and the ultimate outcome i.e. survival or death. The protein expression profiles of early phase survivors were compared to those of early phase non-survivors and late phase survivors.
