Fragmentation/ionization patterns for polar oxidation products (containing nitro, carbonyl, hydroxyl, or carboxylic acid groups) of PAHs during APCI-HRMS analysis were interpreted and proposed. The observed fragmentation pathways of polar PAH oxidation products were shown to be useful in identifying previously unknown compounds (for which no standards are currently available) produced during the nitration or ozonation of PAHs. For many of the species studied, this work represents the first evaluation of fragmentation patterns within an APCI source.
