Mitochondial transporters, by permeabilizing the membrane, may be acting as uncouplers of electron transport from ATP synthesis; 4. Deficiencies in anti-oxidants typically induced by stress may promote alternative stratagems for survival, such as uncoupling of the mitochondrial respiratory system; 5. Survival stratagem may involve the liberation and acquisition of iron and sulfur for incorporation in antioxidant enzymes and other iron- and sulfur-containing essential enzymes that are adversely affected by ROS.
