A. Substitution reactions play important roles in chemistry and biology and their mechanisms have been widely examined in the gas and condensed phases. Using mass spectrometry based methods, it is possible to study substitution reactions either via the use of ion-molecule reactions between the nucleophile X and the substrate RY or via collision-induced dissociation (CID) of a complex between these two.
