The study design let us find several biomarkers for the progression of MetSyn from early stage to T2DM. Some of the findings were: (1) Many phosphocholine plasmalogens show similar pattern and correlate with HDL. (2) Diacylglycerophospholipids and triglycerides show identical pattern, they increase with four standard criteria. (3) Aromatic amino acids had observable changes at very early stage, even before glucose shows a change in concentration. (4) BCAA levels increase significantly from controls to MetSyn and T2DM indicating impaired short-term metabolic control. These findings and the biochemical explanations behind them emphasize the increasing importance of metabolic biomarkers as diagnostics- and progression monitoring tools.
