Flavonoids are a class of naturally occurring and structurally related compounds found widely distributed in plants and plant foods. There is an increasing interest in these substances because of possible effects on human health. They cause a variety of biological effects such as antioxidative, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-carcinogenic activities. Ion trap - time of flight technology was used to elucidate the structures of these compounds combining MSn capability with high mass resolution and accurate mass. Detailed information about elemental composition, isotopic pattern information, and fragmentation could be generated in a single LC/MS-run. In this study main components of a Calendula officinalis essence were analysed and their structures elucidated.
