Mass spectrometric measurement of small molecules in non-adherent cells tend to be incorrect, as conventional cell recovery processes are time consuming and give mechanical load that result in molecular change during preparation. In addition, biological processes are usually asynchronous so that conventional multiple cell method usually give averaged ambiguous results. We developed the live single cell MS which allows quick and direct recovery of the targeted cell with a nanospray needle under a microscope followed by sequential MS analysis. In this report, B lymphocyte apoptosis induced by a steroid was monitored with fluorescent probe, and cells of high or low oxidative stress were selectively recovered and analyzed by this method.
