Both targeted and global metabolomics were applied to piglet plasma and red blood cells collected in the first seven days of life with LC/MS analysis and statistical software. ANOVA analyses performed in the global metabolomics approach yielded 23 significant masses in the plasma samples while no significant masses were found in the red blood cell samples (p-value of 0.05). Single matches from HMDB were found for seven compounds in piglet plasma. Carnitines were targeted in both plasma and red blood cell samples. Of the 11 targeted compounds, all were found to be present in the piglet plasma while only seven were found in piglet red blood cells.
