Despite the similar reactivity of these Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes in solution (same reaction products were obtained, noted in green box, scheme 1), SORI-CID spectra suggest that different "reactive intermediates" are involved in the gas-phase. For the Pd(II) complex, the formed structure is a carbopalladation adduct ion obtained via a Pd phenylethynile complex intermediate. This pathways involves the C-C bond formation between PhCCH and NBD occuring by an insertion/migration. In contrast, in the case of Pt(II) complex, the expected bicyclo [3.2.1] octadiene structure is obtained in the gas-phase.
