Essentially all of the non-volatile core of SOA is collected and extracted by the current method. Water as an extraction solvent is biased toward detection of low O:C, high ionization efficiency compounds, as compared to organic solvents, ESI-FTICR spectra show low monomer signal levels, even though these compounds would be sensitively detected if present in large amounts. The qualitative conclusion is that oligomers make up the majority of SOA. A van Krevelen plot of the compounds that make up SOA suggests at least two parallel routes of oligomer formation exist.
