In my experience, the most common reason that acupuncture is not applied in veterinary practice or is not discussed as a treatment option for referral, is because it is simply misunderstood. The objective of this lecture is to improve the understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture in the eyes of the public and our conventional colleagues by providing translations for some of the more common terms, concepts, and treatment principles utilized in TCM. TCM is in fact a medical model and acupuncture is a technology employed within the model to achieve results. That doesn't sound very "mystic" does it? The point being that if we can "decode" or "demystify" this ancient modality, others can recognize its potential and realize measurable results by applying it in our modern era of medicine. Recognition is the first step toward acceptance - once the modality is recognized as useful in improving the lives of patients, other veterinarians will be more inclined to offer it as an option and clients will be more likely to choose it as a treatment option.
