This paper describes highly efficient in-droplet particle concentrations/separations (over 91% in efficiency), where magnetic particles are concentrated/separated within a droplet by applying a magnetic field and a subsequent EWOD (electrowetting-on-dielectric) actuation physically splits a magnetic particle-rich region into an individual droplet. This in-droplet method will provide a new functionality of separation/concentration for digital (droplet-based) microfluidics, possibly allowing use of many magnetic-particles-based bioassays in digital microfluidics.
