NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS IN SOUTH KOREA

In 1957, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In 1958, the first president of the Republic, Dr. Syngman Rhee joined the Atoms for Peace Program, and legislated the Atomic Energy Law. In 1959, the Office of Atomic Energy was established, and a nuclear reactor for research was installed in 1962. In 1972, construction of the first nuclear power reactor began, and started up in 1977. The first nuclear power reactor in South Korea commenced commercial operation in 1978.
