From 1993 at U. S. Steel Kosice, blast furnaces #2 and #3 are equipped with a coal injection system. The decision to build this equipment was made after economic calculations determined it would be more strategically advantageous to build a new modern facility for coal injection than to overhaul #2 coke battery. In the nineties, the yearly consumption of pulverized coal injection (PCI) was about 280 000 t of dry coal, which represented a specific PCI rate of approximately 100 to 135 kg/thm. Whereas the price difference between coal and metallurgical coke is quite big, the investment into building the coal injection facility returned within 3 years since its start-up and in next years since then it brings costs saving for production of hot metal in U. S. Steel Kosice.
