Canine nerve sheath tumors are not uncommonly encountered and frequently affect the extremities. Nerve sheath tumors affecting the spinal cord / nerve roots, often called schwannomas, are less common and often more detrimental. Little is known about the response of dogs with spinal cord nerve sheath tumors to both surgery and radiation therapy. Historically, survival times for dogs with nerve sheath tumors involving the brachial or lumbar plexus is 12 months; for dogs with tumors involving the nerveroots it is 5 months following surgery.
