The cause of poor performance in the equine athlete is often difficult to determine. This is especially true for racehorses where the poor performance may be detailed by slowing of a few seconds or is intermittent in nature. Multiple findings commonlypresent themselves on the performance exam and the relative contribution of each is difficult to elucidate. Often heart rhythm abnormalities are investigated based on elimination of other causes or suspicion based on performance analysis. Detailed investigation in conditions that are as near an approximation of precipitating conditions may be required.
