Salmonella and Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) are important causative agents of severe diarrhoea in piglets and can subsequently be transferred to humans due to consumption of contaminated pork (7). The selection of therapeutics for treatmentpurposes should be based on the susceptibility of each locally isolated pathogenic bacterium. Combined application of therapeutics which provide synergistic effect, is a reasonable tool to treat animals more effectively (2,3). In Thailand the synergistic effect of tiamulin/halquinol against Salmonella Choleraesuis has been demonstrated previously. The Pleuromutilin tiamulin is a therapeutic attributed to control pathogens in respiratory and GI tract. The synergistic effect of tiamulin with other antibiotics has to be examined in vitro and in vivo. The objective of the study was to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the antimicrobials tiamulin and colistin against Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Salmonella bacteria isolated from diseased pigs and evaluate the combined effect of both therapeutics in vitro.
