PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS ON PORCINE CIRCOVIRUS TYPE 2 ASSOCIATEDDISEASES IN COLOMBIA

Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PVC2) is now considered one of the most important viral emerging pathogens in the world. It has been established as the necessary cause of post weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in swine. Pigs affected with PMWSexhibit progressive weight loss either with or without respiratory signs, diarrhea, pallor or icterus. The final diagnosis of PMWS in unthrifty pigs can be accomplished by demonstration of characteristic granulomatous inflammation in lymphoid tissues coupled with detection of viral materials associated with these lesions. The purpose of this paper is to report, for the first time in Colombia, the presence of PMWS, its typical lesions and the assessment of PCV2 antigen distribution in affected tissues by IHC.
