Perchlorate has been on the Environmental Protection Agency's Contaminate Candidate list since 1998. This toxic anion has been found to inhibit the uptake of iodide in humans, causing the dysfunction of the thyroid gland. Currently ion exchange appears to be the most feasible perchlorate removal tech- nology due to cost considerations. Laboratory studies suggest that DOW3N-based poly- meric ligand exchangers (PLEs) complexed with transition metal cations can be used to produce a selective perchlorate exchanger. Resin regenerates, however, contain concen- trated perchlorate waste solutions that require difficult and costly disposal. We have investigated the microbial reduction of perchlorate from concentrated resin regenerate solutions using Azospira sp. KJ. Our results are based on both batch experiments and a packed bed bioreactor.
