At a site in Long Island, New York, wastes resulting from the production of inks, car- bon paper, and typing ribbon were disposed in open pits. A remedial investigation identi- fied toluene, and to a lesser extent benzene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) as the primary site contaminants in groundwater over an area of 1.4 acres. A remedy consisting of dewatering and SVE was operated for five years before achieving a point of diminish- ing returns. Due to a complex geology consisting of interbedded layers of sand, silt, and clay in a glacial till, a 0.3 acre area of elevated BTEX concentrations in groundwater remained. To address the groundwater impacts, some form of chemical injection to oxi- dize and/or promote aerobic degradation of the BTEX was considered. In addition, recent groundwater samples suggested groundwater contamination unexpectedly migrating upgradient from the remediation area and offsite.
