Numerical modelling work using FLAC 3D has been undertaken to establish the key parametersin the initiation of roof collapse leading to void migration in shallow abandoned workings. The results givean indication of the rockmass strengths required for stability with differing excavation sizes and over-burdenloads. Results for varying rock mass strength and stiffness properties indicate that increases in pore pressure,due to increases in the level of the groundwater table, are a significant factor in the initiation of collapse of theexcavation roof of shallow mine workings.
