Impala Platinum is one of the world's largest refiners of platinum group metals (PGM'S), processing a wide range of PGM containing materials. The refinery utilizes ion-exchange and Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) along with chemical separation, producing high purity metals for global markets. The platinum group metals usually occur together in complex ores containing many elements, often difficult to separate. Likewise, secondary materials containing PGM's often comprise complex matrixes posing problems in recovering the valuable metals. Impala Platinum processes both mine concentrates and secondary materials, therefore its refinery must be able to process feed materials of varying composition. The high value of the PGMs allied to the composition of the materials, requires separation processes that are highly selective and quantitative. At Impala Platinum, the palladium 7MRT process, utilizing SuperLig~R 2, has demonstrated its capability in this regard.
