During last decade some purine derivatives were appointed as promising new drug candidates against Micobacterium tuberculosis . The research was mainly focussed on the derivatives having different substituents in N9, C2, C6 and C8 of the purine ring. It has been demonstrated that the identity of the substituents on C6, C8 and N9 of the purine ring are crucial for activity. Compounds with an aryl, a small alkyl or a proton as the N9 substituent in the purine ring were essentially inactive, whereas 9-benzyl-6-(2-furyl)purines were highly potent.
