There is a need to quickly identify the cause of unexplained shortness of breath to determine if the patient is in congestive heart failure. This can be difficult to diagnose from only the history and physical findings. Recognizing that the patient is in heart failure is critical in order to start life-saving measures immediately in order to prevent potential fatal complications or avoid further decompensation.
