STRATEGIES FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL COORDINATION IN ORDER TO GIVE PRIORITY FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The paper presents some results of the research made within the activities "Traffic flows modeling in congestion conditions - dynamic traffic control and green wave coordination" and "Assessment of the effect of public transport corridor use regarding vehicle flows in congested traffic", both performed in the research project CEEX X2C34 named MOB-URBIS. In order to respond to the requirements of the first activity, some analysis was performed on the elements of timing plan for an isolated signalized intersection as well as in the coordination conditions of an important arterial street in Brasov. The topics become more complex when applying the public transport priority policy in real traffic. So, while moving from a departure point towards a destination in an urban area, each public transport vehicle accumulate delays depending on some parameters such as total number of passengers on board, vehicle frequency, intersection stop delays, traffic jam and so on and so forth. If, in these conditions, we can find a possibility to create a corridor on the important city arterials, then the total delay can be reduced. Thus, persuading road users into switching to public transport can only be done if they have the proof of the public transport efficiency expressed in travel time, money, safety, comfort and convenience.
