Acetylation is a dynamic and readily reversible modification that is at the heart of many essential pathways such as central metabolism, cell differentiation, and apoptosis. Previously, acetylation was thought to be a rare phenomenon in prokaryotes, and few examples were known. Large-scale proteomic studies revealed that the human mitochondrial proteome was highly acetylated. The evolutionary relationship between mitochondria and bacteria has motivated the large-scale investigation of acetylation in bacteria.
